Wander up the stairs in Timothy’s of Newark on a Wednesday night and you may be surprised by what you find.
Heavy Latin beats fill the air. Women in strapy heels are led across the floor as their layered skirts twirl around. They show Intricate footwork, mastered over time. Couples, young and old, hold each other as they move their synchronized bodies to the music. Repetitive turns force women to spin their bodies like dreidels. Here, a man controls a woman’s every move.
Tonight, the University of Delaware ballroom dance team claimed this bar’s floor as its stage and others are eager to join them.
Sitting at a table to the side of the wooden dance floor, junior Carole Bryan watches people showcase their moves. Too young to be allowed in other bars on Main Street, Bryan says tonight she can get out and have some fun. (more…)

Starving, it’s finally 4:30. All contestants sign in. It’s me versus three other girls in my heat. “When I say ‘go,’ ” says the judge. “Ready, set, go!” And we all dive into our plate of chicken wings.
Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity sponsored a Wing-Bowl contest to raise money for their philanthropy, the YouthAIDS Foundation. Sororities and fraternities were invited to enter three members to participate.
Being the wing-lover that I am, I enthusiastically shot my hand straight up in the air to volunteer at my Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority meeting. I figured, “Why not help a fraternity raise money for their philanthropy and represent my sorority, all the while eating wings?” In my eyes, it was a win-win situation.
That was three weeks before the event. I had more than enough time to prepare. Never having participated in a food-eating contest before, I had no technique. I was like a kid learning how to ride their bike for the first time. (more…)

Slipping out of a mini-skirt and snug-fitting tee, I try to focus and collect myself. I have not taken on a task this great since age 6. I step into elastic-waist pants and an oversized t-shirt, hiding my tiny build. I’ll need all the room I can get after this conquest.
A lot of preparation has gone into today — I haven’t eaten a thing, for starters. I just couldn’t, knowing that I was about to encounter one of my greatest enemies.
The cheeseburger. But this was not just any cheeseburger — oh no, this was much more. It was a BK Triple Stacker from Burger King. (more…)

Lights flicker on and off, on and off. The room is spinning around. In the distance, a siren wails. Smoke fills your lungs and obscures your vision. A voice whispers, “Follow me, follow me. We need to escape.”
Cautiously you step forward. Your hands come in contact with cold linked metal. The smoke clears just enough and you find yourself face to face with a bloody, drooling inmate from the Fox River Penitentiary.
